This is a truly touching story which emphasizes the importance and effectiveness of home visits. This one probably changed this little girl’s perception of school- giving her something to look forward to instead of dread- the math club!
A few years ago, I was called to translate by a social worker at a primary school. A teacher had complained that one of her students never looked her in the eye when spoken to and was painfully shy. The child never participated in class unless it was obligatory and only under duress. She was frequently absent, particularly on days when she had to make a presentation before the class. However, the student was very bright, with excellent grades and careful, neat work. The social worker wanted me to contact the parents and arrange a meeting to discuss a special education placement.
Some intuition obliged me to wonder about the need for special education. I stepped out of my usually neutral role as interpreter and asked the social worker why it was necessary. The more questions I asked, the more both of us questioned the recommendation. I…

Nobody is perfect. That’s the truth. It’s the same for doctors, lawyers, parents, students, and teachers. Nobody likes making mistakes. Big or small, mistakes can kill self-esteem, loom over our heads like some grim reaper created out of our own idiocy. In a classroom, teachers often make mistakes early on in their careers; veteran teachers make mistakes, too.
What mistakes do ESL teachers make?
ESL teachers tend to frequently make mistakes throughout their first year. The inadequate training of some programs, lack of preparation, and general inexperience all contribute to these mistakes. They’re fairly common, so don’t feel bad. I made numerous mistakes my first year teaching, and I still make mistakes from time to time.

Here’s a great post from a classmate of mine sharing her personal experience with teaching EFL in Guatemala.
Many ESL students are born in the United States and never know anything but the American classroom. However, there are others who attend school in a totally different setting, and then are expected to adapt to the American classroom, without anyone ever stopping to ask what their former school environment was like. In my time in Guatemala, I was blessed to do an internship for a month as an English as a Foreign Language Teacher for PreK-9th grade. Doing this has given me a lot of perspective that I will value forever. Here is what I learned:
